Gender Equality Leadership in the Canadian Private Sector
The Global Compact Network Canada (GCNC) is proud to announce that the Government of Canada is investing in funding the GCNC for a three-year project for engaging the private sector as a responsible accelerator to eliminate barriers faced by women in the workplace.
This three-year project is entitled Gender Equality Leadership in the Canadian Private Sector. It will focus on engaging corporate partners to develop, test, and implement a set of tools leading to a blueprint for gender equality in the private sector, and a certification methodology.
The project will work towards:
- Defining what Gender Equality at the workplace looks like – what is it that we are trying to achieve? How will we recognize a company where Gender Equality exists? What is the vision? The Women’s Empowerment Principles will be used as a foundation for this step.
- Identifying and addressing the wicked challenges and barriers that we, as companies and as a society, face in making this vision a reality,
- Identifying existing tools, best practices, guidelines and business cases and making those accessible to all through an online platform/database system, and
- Identifying and discussing gender equality certification options, methodology and applicability for the companies in Canada to further showcase their leadership.

In this project, we will be addressing the known barriers and ‘wicked challenges’ of workplace gender equality. The project aims to accelerate action by working with the input of 20 participating companies in Canada who are to become gender equality mentors and leaders. The participating companies in the first year of this 3-year project can be found below.
In the second and third year of the project, the rest of the companies will be added to improve and test the applicability of the blueprint. The GCNC is also working with several advisory partners who are providing insight throughout the project. These partners can also be found below.
News and Resources
On March 8th, International Women’s Day, the GCNC and Status of Women Canada announced the project in Ottawa with theHonourable Minister of Status of Women, Maryam Monsef. Attendees included representatives from participating companies and advisory partners. The announcement included speeches from Minister Monsef, Helle Bank Jorgensen, President Emeritus and Senior Advisor of Global Compact Network Canada, Mona Fortier, MP for Ottawa-Vanier, and senior representatives from participating companies (IKEA, Nutrien, and Export Development Canada).
Thus far, completed steps in this project include:
- Held introductory sessions for all participating companies and advisory partners
- Discussed the Women’s Empowerment Principles Gender Gap Analysis Assessment with the participating companies
- Held webinars to determine what a workplace with gender equality at its core looks like to set the vision
- Received feedback from participating companies on the business case for gender equality
- Held a workshop with all participating companies and advisory partners to discuss the wicked challenges and structure for the gender equality blueprint

We are currently in the process of:
- Compiling the documents which outline the vision for workplace gender equality, the Canadian business case for gender equality, and the wicked challenges to gender equality in the private sector
- Organizing workshops with each participating company to discuss the solutions for the wicked challenges to gender equality which are specific to each organization
- Gathering gender equality tools, best practices, guidelines and business cases to be organized in an accessible online database
- Creating the first draft of the blueprint for gender equality
